Francis E. “Fran” Gutowski, age 72, North Third Street, DuBois, PA died Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Penn Highlands DuBois.

 

Born March 31, 1945 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late Frank A. and Rachel M. (Cheslock) Gutowski. 

 

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served during the Vietnam War serving in France.

 

On July 20, 1968, he married Rita (Novario) Gutowski.  She survives.

 

Fran retired from Penelec as an office supervisor after 28 years of service.  After retirement, he was the owner/operator of Nelson’s Grocery on Maple Avenue.

 

He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church where he was a member of the funeral lunch team.  He was a past board member of the DuBois Area United Way and the American Red Cross.  He was a member of Compassionate Friends.  His passion was cooking and taking care of people, but above all, he loved being with his family.

 

Fran is survived by five daughters (Julia Gutowski; Jennifer Nixon and her husband, Donald; Mary Shaffer and her husband, Brian; Frances “Franny” Gallagher and her husband, Brian; and Nicki Gutowski and her companion, Nick Forsythe, all of DuBois, PA) two sisters (Helena Leair and her husband, Clarence and Mary Gutowski, both of Weedville, PA), and eight grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by two sons (Joseph and Henry Gutowski).

 

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.

 

A Scriptural Wake Service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 P.M. from the funeral home.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 10 A.M. from St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer and Fr. B. LaMonte Sayers con-celebrating.

 

Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery.

 

Memorials may be sent to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mary K. "Polly" Petersen, age 70, Creation Drive, DuBois, PA died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Penn Highlands DuBois.
 
Born September 30, 1946 in Indianapolis, IN, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Kathleen (Horgan) Logan.
 
On August 26, 1972, she married John C. Petersen.  He survives.
 
Polly retired as a registered nurse from the DuBois Regional Medical Center after over 20 years of service.  She worked in the Emergency Room and for Home Health in the Bennett's Valley area.
 
She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church where she was a past Eucharistic minister.  She was also a volunteer at the Free Medical Clinic of DuBois.  Polly loved to read and vacation at the shore.
 
She is survived by three children (Matthew Petersen and his wife, Kristine of Ashburn, VA; Jennifer Petersen and her husband, Jeffrey Wisneski of Pittsburgh, PA; and David Petersen and his wife, Katie of Linden, PA), three brothers (Joseph Logan and his wife, Claire of CA; John Logan and Charles Logan, both of Washington, D.C.) and two sisters (Ann Lawlor and her husband, Greg of MD and Elizabeth Buff and her husband, Ernest of NJ).  She is also survived by a grandson, Linus Wisneski.
 
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 4-7 P.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 10 A.M. from St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Jonathan Wisneski as celebrant.

Leona (Graham) Van Hoyweghen, 93 years of age, passed away April 20, 2017.  Leona lived in Treasure Lake, DuBois for the past 31 years and was formerly from Clearfield.
 
Born September 12, 1923 in Woodland, Pennsylvania, Leona was the daughter of the former William and Mabel (Turner) Graham.  She was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II in Washington, DC.  On January 20, 1945, she married Joseph Van Hoyweghen who was also serving in the Navy in Washington, DC.  They had a formal uniformed Naval wedding at the Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral in Washington with the wedding party members also being in full uniform.  After her honorable discharge from the Navy; and with Joseph's eventual honorable discharge from the Navy at the end of the war, they relocated to his home state of Michigan. Within a few years, the couple came back to Pennsylvania and spent their entire life here.
 
During her working years, Leona had various customer service and secretarial jobs in the Clearfield area.  She loved the outdoors and working in the yard and gardens; but most of all, she always loved having a good book to read. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
 
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (Joe) who passed away in 2011 and her parents, William and Mabel Graham of Woodland, her twin brother, Lester, of Clearfield, her sister, Helen DeLong Brown of Clearfield, and a childhood sister, Charlotte. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Thomas Trout, of Marion, NY who passed away in 2013.
 
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Thomas) Trout of Marion, NY and a son, Joseph (Karen) Van Hoyweghen Jr. of Rockton, Pa.  She leaves five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. 
Leona will be greatly missed by her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren; but she will always be remembered in the hearts of those who loved her.      
 
There will be no public viewing. Private funeral and burial arrangements are under the direction of the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., DuBois, Pa.  Leona's final resting place is next to her husband in Morningside Cemetery, DuBois, Pa.

Robert “Bob” L. Thomas, Sr., age 88, Orchard Street, Anita, PA formerly of North 4th Street, DuBois, PA died Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at his home in Anita, PA.

 

Born August 20, 1928 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late George and Irene (Reasinger) Thomas.

 

On September 22, 1956, he married Bernice (Albanese) Thomas.  She preceded him in death on November 3, 2001.

 

He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army during the Korean War.

 

Bob retired from the Deposit Bank as the head of maintenance after 13 years of service.  Previous to that, he worked for 30 years at Hallstrom Construction.

 

He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church.  He was a life member of the J.E. DuBois Hose Co. #3, the Knights of Columbus Council #519; and Assembly 2661 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.  He was a Pennsylvania State Constable where he served as vice president of the state constable organization.  He was a captain of the former DuBois Auxiliary Police, a past president of the Gateway Fair Association and a past member of the DuBois Lions Club.  He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Ruptured Ducks.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

 

Bob is survived by two children:  Robert L. Thomas, Jr. and his wife, Susan of Anita, PA and Christina G. Mumma and her husband, William of DuBois, PA, four grandchildren (Shirley Dahrouge; Danielle Mozafari; Kirsta White and Billy Mumma), and two great grandchildren (Tyler and Olivia Dahrouge). He is also survived by a very special lady, Martha McCullough.

 

He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Chizmar and a brother, James Thomas.

 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.

 

A Scriptural Wake Service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 P.M. from the funeral home.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 10 A.M. from St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant.

 

Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.

Donald E. Pifer, age 86, Maple Avenue, DuBois, PA died Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the Punxsutawney Hospital.

 

Born March 18, 1931 in Sykesville, PA, he was the only child of the late Donald K. and Adeline Alice (Zimmerman) Pifer.

 

His wife of 62 years, Mable C. (Gent) Pifer survives.

 

He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War.

 

Donald was the former owner of Keller Bros. Cleaners in DuBois.  He also was the office manager/dispatcher for Shaw Trucking in Brockway.

 

He was the past Commander of the George D. Montgomery American Legion Post #17.

 

Donald is survived by his daughters, Pastor Dawn Krishart and her husband, Thomas of Black Lick, PA and Kimberly Pifer of DuBois, PA; and a son, Philip Pifer and his wife, Misty Perry-Pifer of Sunbury, OH.  He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jonathan Krishart of Blacklick, OH; Matthew Krishart of DuBois, PA and Rowan Pifer of Sunbury, OH and two great grandsons, Cameron and James Krishart.

 

There will be no visitation.

 

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 11 A.M. from the Light and Life Church with Pastor Mark Lutcher officiating.

M. Louise Krajewski, age 87 of Deerfield Road, Reynoldsville, PA died Saturday, April 15, 2017 at her home.
 
Born on November 29, 1929 in Floreffe, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles & Flora (Frye) McMahon.
 
She was a homemaker and was a cook at various area restaurants including the Arena & the DuBois Hospital.
 
She was a member of the Soldier Community Church.
 
She is survived by 2 daughters (Karen Booher and her husband Jeff of DuBois, PA, and Barbara Johnson and her husband Jeff of Reynoldsville, PA)6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 sisters (Virginia Wylie & Joan Fiedler) and a brother (Herbert McMahon).
 
She was preceded in death by 2 brothers (Charles & Howard McMahon) and an infant sister (Mary McMahon).
 
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017 from 4 to 5 p.m. from the Soldier Community Church

Mary F. Laman, age 89, Grand Avenue, DuBois, PA died Thursday, April 13, 2017 at her home.

 

Born February 8, 1928 in Reynoldsville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Antonio (Sorbelli) Cuba and Mary A. (DeLuca) Cuba.

 

She was married to Richard J. Laman.  He preceded her in death.

 

She was a graduate of the DuBois Business College.  She, along with her husband, Richard, was the owner of the DuBois Nissan-Saab Garage for many years.  Previous to that, she had worked for Rockwell International Manufacturing in DuBois.

 

She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and the funeral lunch bereavement committee.  She was also an American Red Cross volunteer.

 

Mary is survived by two daughters:  Susan Hartzfeld and her husband, Thomas of DuBois, PA and Roseann Gesell of Atlanta, GA, one grandson, Tommy Hartzfeld, and her friend and caregiver, Shawna Miles of Luthersburg, PA.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

 

Mary was preceded in death by two sisters (Anna and Frances Cuba) and six brothers (James, John, Lawrence, Joseph, William and Richard Cuba).

 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 2-5 P.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.

 

A Scriptural Wake Service will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 1:30 P.M. from the funeral home.

Leo "Casey" Siemucha, age 84, Punxsutawney, PA, formerly of DuBois, PA died Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Mulberry Square Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Punxsutawney, PA.
 
Born October 16, 1932 in Kramer, PA, he was the son of the late John and Teckla (Zeych) Siemucha.
 
He retired in 1963 as a factory worker at the International Filler Company in North Tonawanda, NY.  Leo was an avid deer hunter and fisherman.  He enjoyed watching sports and game shows on television.  He really liked the football and baseball games of Pennsylvania teams.  He had a great sense of humor and you could always look forward to a few good laughs whenever you were with him.
 
He is survived by several nieces and nephews, and was cared for locally by his nephew, David Walko and his wife, Sandra.  He will fondly be remembered by his great niece, Briel Pecourt and great nephews; Crittenden Hughes, Elijah Goodbread, and Manoli and Basil Despines.  
 
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.  He was preceded in death by three sisters (Helen Walko Ivoska; Stella Novasat and Victoria Kroften) and six brothers (John, Anthony, Alex, Samuel, Peter and Michael Siemucha).
 
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.
 
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 1 P.M. from the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc. with Msgr. Richard Siefer officiating.

Susan F. McElroy, age 72, Treasure Lake, DuBois, PA died Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.

 

Susan was born April 1, 1945 in Fort Worth, TX.

 

On December 31, 1965, she married William V. McElroy.  He survives.

 

Susan retired from the Army Air Force Exchange Service after over 25 years of service.

 

She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing Mahjong.  She was a volunteer at Hahne Cancer Center in DuBois, PA and a member of the Ladies of the Lake.  At Arlington National Cemetery, she was an Arlington Lady, never allowing a U.S. Soldier to be buried alone.  Above all, she enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

 

Susan is survived by two daughters (Lori Fitzhugh and her husband, Tom of Woodbridge, VA and Jeanette Calli of Woodbridge, VA); three sisters (Judy Partington and her husband, Richard of Phoenix, AZ; Helen Embery of Kansas City, KS and Beth Henderson and her husband, Jack of Marble Falls, TX).  She is also survived by five grandchildren (Devin Taylor; Riley Fitzhugh, and Will, Charlotte and Julia Calli).

 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2017 from 2-4 P.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.

 

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 4 P.M. from the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc. with Pastor Dave Nagele officiating.

 

Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.

Born July 7, 1946 in Ridgway, PA, she was the daughter of the late Chester R. and Dorothy G. (Bosnik) Burrs.

 

She was married to Joseph J. Donahue.  He preceded her in death in 1993.

 

Ann was a chef in the DuBois Area.  She worked at various restaurants and retired after many years of service.

 

She was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.  She also enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, traveling and going to the casino.

 

She made her home with her fiancé, Stewart Preston of Falls Creek, PA.

 

Ann is survived by 5 children (Joann Donahue and her fiancé, Eric Von Schmittou of Treasure Lake, DuBois, PA; Marla Crytser and her husband, Scott of Myrtle Beach, SC; Jeff Donahue and his wife, Terri of Ft. Mill, NC; Sam Donahue and his wife, Lori of Treasure Lake, DuBois, PA; and Nicole Preston and her husband, Nathan of New Castle, PA); three sisters (Jackie Drayer of West Point, VA; Carol Goodford of Garner, NC and Mary Jo Hughes of DuBois, PA; and a brother, (Chester Burrs of Rochester, NY).  She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

 

Ann was preceded in death by two brothers (Paul and David Burrs).

 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 2-5 P.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.

Daniel E. Ball, age 82, Curwensville, PA, formerly of Leopold Avenue in DuBois, PA, died Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Ridgeview Elder Care in Curwensville, PA.

 

Born May 16, 1934 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late Arthur W. Ball, Sr. and Pauline Z. (Hoover) Ball.

 

He worked for Robertson Tile Corp in Morrisville, PA for many years.

 

Daniel enjoyed hunting.

 

He is survived by his brother, Arthur W. Ball, Jr. and his wife, Margaret of Levittown, PA.

 

Daniel was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Ball.

Susan M. Winward, age 68, Harrisburg, PA died Monday, April 3, 2017 at Lifecare Hospital in Mechanicsburg, PA.  
 
Born May 13, 1948 in DuBois, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Jean L. (Smith) Taube.
 
She was married to Robert Winward.  He preceded her in death.
 
Susan was a homemaker.
 
She is survived by one son (Timothy Winward of Harrisburg, PA); a brother (Allen Taube of Knox, PA); three sisters (Marian Grinder of Rushville, NY; Eleanor Grieneisen of Oviedo, FL and Joanne Clontz of Rochester, NY).
 
Susan was also preceded in death by two sons (Christopher and Robert Winward) and two brothers (Charles and Thomas Taube).
 
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 10-11 A.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.

Julia A. Haag, age 72, South Main Street, DuBois, PA died Monday, April 3, 2017 at her home.

 

Born July 10, 1944 in Wilkes Barre, PA, she was the daughter of the late Clemence and Jule Ann (Yakubaskas) Redenski.

 

She was married to Raymond Haag.  He preceded her in death.

 

Julia retired as a licensed practical nurse.

 

She was a member of the Smithtown Community Church.  She enjoyed painting and being with her great grandchildren.

 

Julia is survived by four children:  Joseph Olswfski of Pocono, PA; Peggy Diaz of Lamar, PA; Catherine Rosage of DuBois, PA; and Raelyn Jones of Portland, OR, a brother, Skip Redenski, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeremiah Diaz.

 

There will be no public visitation.

 

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Kenneth H. Larrabee, Jr., age 64, Hemlock Drive, Reynoldsville, PA died Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.

 

Born March 10, 1953 in Watertown, NY, he was the son of the late Kenneth H. Larrabee, Sr. & Mary (Manchester) Larrabee.

 

On May 23, 1986, he married Barbara J. (Bowers) Larrabee.  She survives.

 

Ken worked at GKN Sintered Metals in DuBois for 25 years.

 

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and was an avid sports fan.

 

Ken is survived by a daughter, Lisa Kuc and her husband, Mike of Camden, NY and a son, Travis Larrabee and his wife, Tami of DuBois, PA, three brothers (Douglas, Arthur and Michael Larrabee), two sisters (Karen Vogel and Linda LaFlamme), and three grandchildren (Tanner and Gavin Kuc and Lilliana Larrabee).

 

He was preceded in death by two brothers (Keith and John Larrabee).

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 11 A.M. from the Light and Life Church with Pastor Mark Lutcher officiating.

Josephine M. Kosko, age 93, of Maple Avenue in DuBois, PA died Monday, March 27, 2017 at Christ the King Manor.

 

Born March 18, 1924 in DuBois, PA, she was the daughter of the late John & Agnes (Davis) Naslavage.

 

She was married to George P. Kosko.  He preceded her in death on March 18, 1986.

 

Josephine was a homemaker. 

 

She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church.

 

Josephine is survived by a son, George S. Kosko and his wife, Alison of Richmond, VA and one grandson, George P. Kosko.

 

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret and Helen Naslavage.

 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 from 6-8 P.M. at the Baronick Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 10 A.M. from St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant.

 

Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery.
