BELLEFONTE– One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash that closed down a 12-mile stretch of Interstate 80 eastbound near Centre County, the Associated Press is reporting.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is alerting drivers to avoid the closed down area of I-80 eastbound.

Dispatch said the crash happened near mile-marker 165 around midnight on Wednesday.

PennDOT expects the closure to last until late Wednesday afternoon and cautions drivers to be alert for slowed or stopped traffic along the detour route.

I-80 eastbound is currently closed between exit 161 in Bellefonte and 173 in Lamar.

There are message boards along I-80 that will alert drivers about the closures and detours.

Passed though State College last night between 7:30-8pm.  Accidents were happening all around me.  Of course, the 18-wheeler's were traveling as if the roads were clear.

I-80 Eastbound in Centre County has finally Re-opened

State College, PA – As of 9:15 P.M., a section of I-80 eastbound in Centre County has been re-opened, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The roadway was closed in the early morning hours today due to a multiple vehicle crash at mile-marker 165 in Centre County.

With the roadway re-opened, the detour has been lifted. Drivers had been following the orange detour, which used Routes 26 and 64 to move traffic from the Bellefonte/161 interchange to the Lamar/173 interchange in Clinton County.

PennDOT thanks drivers for their patience during this incident.

Drivers can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 770 traffic cameras.

The chain-reaction accident closed a 12-mile stretch of I-80.

Black ice was reportedly a problem in several areas.
