If children's minds are going there, chances are that the problem has already begun and it began at home with the parents. Words are not evil, they have power over someone only if that person allows it. There are teaching moments, and they are far more powerful than trying to shelter a child from everything on the planet. If a child sees the plate and does happen to make a comment, that is when a teaching moment happens, and a discussion is opened up. If you hide everything from a child, there are no teaching moments to be had.

Exactly how it is in our house. I never really sheltered mine. I just explained a lot they understood and are now great teens.
